Getting Sydney back on track

The biggest coordinated program of rail maintenance ever undertaken in Sydney has begun.

Sydney Trains has created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

We’ve done our best to minimise impacts to passengers, focusing our maintenance work outside of peak times, predominantly on weekends, and staggering it across different lines on different weekends so trains can still run. We recognise some disruption is inevitable.

How to keep updated

The Sydney Rail Repair Plan has been prepared in response to the recent recommendations made by the expert panel conducting the Sydney Trains Review.

The primary recommendation was to focus on clearing the extensive maintenance backlog across the network, reduce equipment failures and restore reliability.

Sydney Trains has now created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

Maintenance work is being prioritised during existing trackwork windows such as on weekends, weeknights, during school holidays or during off peak on a weekday when fewer people are catching trains.

We work closely with our event planning team to ensure there will be transport options to get you where you need to go.

Trackwork Monday 29 April to Sunday 5 May 2024

Monday 29 April to Thursday 2 May

  • Monday from 9.50pm to 11.55pm, trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Museum.
  • From 11.55pm to 1.30am, trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Town Hall.
     
  • Tuesday to Thursday, nightly from 9.50pm to 1.30am, trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Museum.
  • Some trains may start or end at Central, run to a changed timetable or leave from different platforms.

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May   

  • Trains will not run on the City Circle, or between Central and Wynyard.
  • For travel around the City use the light rail between Central and Circular Quay, or local bus services.
  • T4 trains continue to run between Central and Bondi Junction, stopping at Town Hall, Martin Place and Kings Cross.

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May

  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Hornsby and Wynyard only.
  • Trains will not run between Wynyard and Central, or on the City Circle. Change at Wynyard for the light rail or local buses to continue your journey.
  • T9 Northern Line trains run to a changed timetable between Berowra and Central, platforms 1-12, via Strathfield.

Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May  

  • From 10.20pm Friday to 8am Saturday, buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield.
  • Trains run between Emu Plains and Lidcombe, then Olympic Park, and between Strathfield and Central.
  • Richmond trains run between Richmond and Leppington.
     
  • From 8am Saturday, trains run between Emu Plains and Central, platforms 1-12, and make extra stops at Flemington, Homebush and Burwood.
  • Richmond trains run between Richmond and Leppington.
     
  • Sunday from 5.30am to 10.20am, Richmond trains run between Richmond and Olympic Park.

Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May 

  • From 10.20pm Friday to 2am Saturday, buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield, and Inner West trains between Strathfield and Ashfield.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Olympic Park via Granville.
     
  • Express trains run between Strathfield and Central. Inner West trains run between Ashfield and the City.
     
  • Saturday from 2am to 8am, buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield, and Inner West trains between Strathfield and Central. Express trains continue to run between Strathfield and Central, platforms 1-12.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Lidcombe via Regents Park.
     
  • Saturday from 8am, buses replace Inner West trains between Strathfield and Central. Express trains continue to run between Strathfield and Central, platforms 1-12.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Lidcombe via Regents Park, and between Leppington and Richmond.
  • Change at Parramatta or Lidcombe for trains towards Central.
  • T1 Western Line Penrith trains make extra stops at Flemington, Homebush and Burwood.
     
  • Sunday from 5.50am to 10.20am, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville.

  • Daily from 8am to 8pm, extra trains run between Hurstville and Bondi Junction.

  • Trains run to a changed timetable with extra trains running between Leppington and Richmond.
     
  • Sunday from 5.50am to 10.20am, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Lidcombe via Regents Park, and between Richmond or Schofields and Olympic Park.
  • You may need to change trains at Lidcombe to continue your journey.

Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May

  • From 10.20pm Friday to 8am Saturday, buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield. Trains run to a changed timetable between Olympic Park and Lidcombe, with some trains continuing to Penrith or Leppington.
  • From 8am Saturday, some trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern.

Monday 29 April to Thursday 2 May

  • From 9.50pm to 1.30am, trains start and end at Central due to City Circle trackwork.

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May  

  • Revesby trains run between Revesby and Central via the Airport.
  • Most Macarthur trains run between Macarthur and Sydenham only. Change trains at Revesby if you are travelling to Airport stations.
  • T4 Illawarra Line trains run between Sydenham and Bondi Junction.

Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April

  • Nightly from 10.10pm to 2am, buses replace trains between Epping and Strathfield.
  • If travelling to the City change at Epping for the metro then change at Chatswood for a train to the City.

Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 May   

  • Nightly from 10.20pm to 1am, buses replace trains between Rhodes and Hornsby.

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May   

  • Daily until 8am, trains run between Berowra and Central, platforms 1-12, every 30 minutes.
  • Daily from 8am, trains run between Berowra or Hornsby and Central, platforms 1-12 only.

Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May

  • From 10pm Friday to 8am Saturday, trains run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Blacktown only due to trackwork between Lidcombe and Strathfield.
  • Change at Penrith for express buses to Strathfield.
  • Some trains from Blacktown towards Blue Mountains Line stations leave 30 minutes later than normal.
     
  • From 8am Saturday, trains may run to a changed timetable due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.

Monday 29 April to Thursday 2 May

 

  • Nightly from 10pm to 3am, most trains run to a changed timetable via the T1 North Shore Line due to trackwork on the T9 Northern Line.
  • Buses run between Strathfield and Hornsby to connect with Central Coast & Newcastle Line trains.
  • Most trains towards Newcastle Interchange run up to 30 minutes later than the normal timetable.
     
  • Tuesday to Friday, the 1.47am Central to Newcastle Interchange train will start at Hornsby at 2.23am.
  • A bus leaves Central at 1.29am, running express to Hornsby to connect with this train.

  • Nightly from 9.50pm to 1.30am, trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Town Hall.
  • Some trains may start or end at Central, run to a changed timetable or leave from different platforms.
  • You may need to change trains to continue your journey.
  • The light rail runs in both directions between Circular Quay and Central.

Friday 10 to Sunday 12 May    

  • From 9.30pm Friday, trains will not run on the City Circle, or between Central and Wynyard.
  • For travel around the City, use L2 or L3 light rail services between Central Chalmers Street and Circular Quay, or local buses.
  • T4 trains run between Central and Bondi Junction, stopping at Town Hall, Martin Place and Kings Cross.

Monday 6 to Thursday 9 May

  • Nightly from 9.40pm to 1.30am, buses replace trains between Hornsby and Wynyard.
  • From Wynyard, catch a City Circle train or the light rail to continue your journey.

Friday 10 to Sunday 12 May

  • From 9.30pm Friday, buses replace trains between North Sydney and Wynyard.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Hornsby and North Sydney only.
  • T9 trains run between Berowra and Central, platforms 1-12, via Strathfield.
  • From Wynyard, catch the light rail or local buses to continue your journey.

  • From 9.30pm Friday to 2am Saturday, 5.30pm Saturday to 6am Sunday and 10.30pm Sunday to 2am Monday, trains from Penrith to Central run via Strathfield, in that direction only. Trains from Central to Penrith run via Bankstown.
  • Express buses replace trains from Central to Strathfield.
  • T2 trains run between Ashfield and Leppington or Campbelltown via Granville. If you are travelling from Strathfield to T1 Western Line stations you will need to change trains at Granville.
     
  • Saturday from 5.50am to 8.45am, buses replace trains between Richmond and Blacktown.
  • From 8.45am to 11am, buses replace trains between Richmond and Schofields.
  • Trains run between Blacktown or Schofields and Olympic Park only.

  • Change at Strathfield for trains to Central, or at Ashfield for all-stations buses towards Central.
  • Express buses replace trains from Central to Strathfield.
     
  • From 5.50am Saturday to 6pm Sunday, buses also replace trains between Leppington and Glenfield.
  • Trains run between Campbelltown and Ashfield via Granville only.
  • From 6pm Sunday, trains run between Leppington and Ashfield via Granvile only.
     
  • Trackwork on the City Circle may also affect how you travel. Change at Central for T4 trains, the light rail, or local buses to continue your journey.
